I quit the 9-5 to pursue my passion for photography.
My name is Shane Coker, 24-year-old portrait + branding photographer currently based in Southern California. Roughly three years ago I took an ill-advised leap into the world of freelance photography. Previously, I was working a 9-5 job, my income was steady, there was room to grow in the company, and I despised every second of it.
I always knew I wanted to pursue a creative path in life. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my Grandfather who is a freelance architect, illustrator, painter, and photographer. This left a significant impact on me early in life. As I stumbled through junior college I took all kinds of art classes, but never resonated with any of them; I felt lost. So, I looked towards alternatively creative avenues. Such as philosophy, creative writing, poetry, astronomy, and psychology. As I loved most of these, I still wasn’t filling that void. Finally, after being persuaded into taking an intro course in photography, I had a feeling that this could be something worth pursuing.
This was 6 years ago. Since then I took every photo class offered at that junior college, quit my 9-5 routine, dove head first into starting my own freelance business, and haven’t looked back since. 2016 was my first official year freelancing full-time and what a journey it has been. I have struggled, overcome, learned a lot, made way too many mistakes, and achieved some pretty rad goals throughout the process.
To say that I am passionate about photography would be an understatement. Since taking that intro course back in 2012, photography has consumed every aspect of my life and I haven’t been able to put down a camera since. I am genuinely in love with this craft and I’m consistently growing in my abilities and talents. If you give me the opportunity to capture your wedding day, work alongside you to create an identity for your brand or allow me to take your portrait, I promise to bring this passion.
Let’s create something extraordinary, together.
