I quit the 9-5 to pursue my passion for photography.
My name is Shane Coker, 23-year-old portrait + branding photographer currently based in San Diego, California. Two years ago I took an ill-advised leap into the world of freelance photography. Previously, I was working a 9-5 job, money was good, there was room to grow in the company, and I hated every second of it.
I always knew I wanted to pursue a creative path in life, I just didn’t know exactly what that was. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my Grandfather who is a Freelance architect, illustrator, painter, and photographer. I think this left a serious impact on me early in life. As I stumbled through junior college I took all kinds of art classes, but never resonating with any of them; I felt seriously lost. So, I looked towards alternatively creative avenues. Such as philosophy, creative writing, poetry, astronomy, & even psychology. As I loved most of these, I still wasn’t filling that void. Finally, after being talked into taking an intro course in photography, I knew instantly. This was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and I was going to do anything I could to pursue that path.
This was 6 years ago. Since then I took every photo class offered at that junior college, quit my 9-5 routine, dove head first into starting my own Freelance business, and haven’t looked back since. 2016, was my first official year freelancing full-time and what a journey it has been. I have struggled, overcome, learned a lot, made tons of mistakes, & achieved some pretty rad goals.
To say that I am passionate about photography would be an understatement. Since taking that intro course back in 2012, it has consumed every aspect of my life, and I haven’t been able to put down a camera since. I love this craft, and I’m constantly growing in my abilities and talents. I’d love to partner with you and create some beautiful memories together.
